Our Story

” I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your works; I muse on the work of Your hands.” (Psalm 143:5)

Fairfield Church is one of the oldest Christian congregations in our country. When the American Revolution was still a century in the future, Fairfield’s first pastor was in his pulpit!

The Bible likens the Church of Jesus Christ to a construction project when it says, “…the whole building, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.” (Ephesians 2:21,22).

“For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” (Galatians 3:27-29)

FAQ’s

Q. What does “reformed” mean?

A. Reformed theology means that we honor the Bible as God’s word and that we focus on teaching from the Bible. It has several emphases.
Here are three of them:
1. God’s word is the only rule for what we believe and how we live.
2. God is sovereign in all of life.
3. God is sovereign in the salvation of people.

Q. What does Presbyterian mean?

A. Presbyterian basically means that our church is led by a group of godly men that we call elders. Some churches only have one pastor in charge. Others have a hierarchy above the pastor. Pastor Chris, along with his fellow ruling elders, all called by the congregation, lead and rule our church.

Q. What kind of music do you sing?

A. We sing hymns – we love our hymnal! We might sing contemporary music on special occasions but we primarily sing from our hymnal. It’s part of our traditional worship service.

Q. What kind of service do you have?

A. We have a traditional service which means there’s an order of worship that is fairly standard for every service. There is variety in that order but generally our services include times of prayer, confession, teaching from God’s word, and singing praise and worship.

Q. What is the Lord’s Supper?

A. I like to describe the Lord’s Supper as a picture sermon. Paul says in 1 Cor 11 that when we’re participating in the Lord’s Supper, we all are proclaiming the gospel to each other. Just as a meal that we eat and enjoy nourished our bodies, so the spiritual meal of the Lord’s Supper feeds our soul with the gospel.

Q. Who should take the Lord’s Supper?

A. Members of good standing of a Bible-believing church are the only ones who should partake of the Lord’s Supper. The Bible teaches that the Lord’s Supper is a covenant meal meant for those who trust in Christ. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 10:16-17 that communion is a participation in Christ’s body and blood, signifying a spiritual unity with Him. Paul states in 1 Corinthians 11:29, “For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.” The Lord’s Supper is not a mere ritual; it requires recognizing Christ’s sacrificial work. Paul again warns in 1 Corinthians 11:27-29 those who eat and drink “in an unworthy manner” are guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord and bring judgment upon themselves.

Q. What is baptism in your church?

A.  Baptism is a special ceremony that shows a person belongs to God and is part of the church. It is a sign of God’s promise to forgive sins and give new life through Jesus.

1. Why Do Presbyterians Baptize People?
– Jesus told His followers to baptize people as a sign that they belong to Him (Matthew 28:19).
– Baptism shows that God washes away sins and brings people into His family, the church.
– It’s kind of like how a wedding ring shows that someone is married—it’s a symbol of something important.

2. Who Can Be Baptized?
– Adults who believe in Jesus – If someone decides to follow Jesus, they get baptized to show their faith.
– Babies of Christian parents – Presbyterians also baptize babies because they believe children are part of God’s family too, just like in the Bible when Jewish babies were circumcised as a sign of God’s promise. The child still has to grow up and believe in Jesus for themselves one day.

3. Does Baptism Save You?
– No, getting baptized doesn’t automatically make someone a Christian.
– It’s a sign of God’s promise, but each person still needs to have faith in Jesus for themselves.

4. How Is Baptism Done?
– Some churches dip people completely under water, but Presbyterians usually sprinkle or pour water on the person’s head.
– The important part is not how much water is used, but what baptism represents—God’s promise of new life in Jesus.

5. Why Do Presbyterians Baptize Babies?
– In the Bible, God included children in His promises to families (Genesis 17:7, Acts 2:39).
– Baptizing a baby doesn’t mean they are automatically saved. It just shows they are part of the church, and one day they will need to decide to follow Jesus themselves.
Q. Why are there different denominations?

A.  It’s the reality of human nature. Jesus prayed that we would all be one, but until Christ’s return, we’re not going to be perfect. The core issue is how is a man right with God? The best way to distinguish a true church from a church that’s not true is that a true church believes and teaches and practices the gospel, salvation by faith alone in Christ alone.

Q. How should I dress to go to your church?

A. You can dress any way that you believe is appropriate in a public place. It can be informal like jeans and a t-shirt or formal like a suit and tie for the men or dresses for the ladies.
Pastor Chris wears a tie on communion Sundays but wears button-down shirts the other weeks.
